The Part-time issue has always been an issue. Its the drivers position to protect the 40 hour workweek. At this time, there is one part-timer employed. That part-timer has a workweek which includes days that he is paid MORE than he works.
The drivers did agree but not a Tentative Agreement, to allow the company 7 (which is what CCTA asked for), under the assumption that they would be working through the summer as well to allow more drivers off in the summer. The company did not agree to that as well as proposing only 7% of the workforce off in the summer. Currently, six drivers can be on vacation during the same week. The 7% proposal from the company actually drops that total down to 5.
The company also proposed to raise the weekly hours on the part-time positions from 20 hours a week to 25. Drivers currently have the short of 40 workweeks, leaving the drivers to make up their hours. If 7 part-timers are hired under the company's proposal, that would be 35 EXTRA hours gone to part time leaving the drivers LESS time to make up. Drivers who fail to make their 40 hours have had to pay the difference for their health insurance. The company says they can use personal time or holiday time to make it up. Is THAT fair?
Part-time positions are not what the company needs, its to work WITH the drivers for a better schedule instead of coming up with excuses as to why they cant do better without part-timers.
